Between tradition and reinvention, Le Café du Peintre captures the best of Lyon’s cuisine, without ever losing its touch.
The big picture
Located on Boulevard des Brotteaux, Le Café du Peintre has been serving lunch daily since 2009, a true Lyonnais bouchon run by chef Florence Périer. She delivers traditional cuisine des gones, reinvented day by day according to the market and her inspiration. The regulars are many, and we can understand why. The team quickly makes you feel at home with their candor and spontaneity. The meal quickly brings joy through its generosity and precision. The glass partition separating the dining room from the kitchen gives us a sneak peek at the delights to come.

The preparatory sketches
If we extend the pictorial metaphor, Le Café du Peintre is both a museum and an artist’s studio. On one hand, you rediscover masterpieces of Lyonnais gastronomy. On the other, you’re surprised by ever-renewed creations. On the classics side, Florence Périer updates some must-haves, like harengs pommes à l’huile or lentils and calf’s feet salad. As a daily special, marinated summer vegetables with parmesan shavings add a welcome touch of freshness to the menu.

The finishing touches
Throughout the meal, the Compagnie du Rognon was eyeing some of the desserts on a nearby table. We were tempted by the sweet prospects, albeit anxious to see those delights slowly dwindling as portions were served to other guests. Fortunately, after a cervelle de canut, we were served our slices of clafoutis and baba au rhum. Two more delicious proofs of the generosity and authenticity of this Lyonnais bouchon. Just like the chef herself, with whom we exchanged a few words. This meal at Le Café du Peintre ends with no blot on the canvas.
