Sometimes, being wrong feels so good. Heading into Vieux-Lyon, the Compagnie was ready to endure yet another tourist trap. Instead, we stumbled into a heart-stealer, the Auberge des Canuts won us over with its generosity and authenticity.

Struck by hunger, you settle on the terrace of what looks like a postcard-perfect Lyonnais bouchon. Except this isn’t a postcard — it’s real life. And that’s exactly the experience the Auberge des Canuts delivers: an authentic bouchon set in an exceptional location, where the promise is fully kept on the plate. It’s no surprise the restaurant has earned the official “Les Bouchons Lyonnais” label, along with the Maître Restaurateur distinction.

Auberge of the Rhône

No need to wait for sunny days to enjoy the Auberge des Canuts. True to its name, the place has all the charm of an inn and all the authenticity of a bouchon. Warm and rustic, wood is everywhere: a massive carved counter, a line of barrels hiding a few jajas — local wines — an exposed-beam ceiling, and an impressive wine shelf. Here and there, a few stone walls and red banquettes add a touch of elegance to the cosy setting.

Chef Véricel, Chef Very Good

Owner and chef of the Auberge des Canuts, Romain Véricel is Lyon through and through. He started out in the restaurant business as a teenager, cutting his teeth right here in Vieux-Lyon. He’s been everything in the kitchen hierarchy: dishwasher, waiter, commis, sous-chef, and finally head chef. He then opened his first family restaurant in the Part-Dieu district. But Chef Véricel has always been deeply attached to Vieux-Lyon — a neighbourhood that embodies both his culinary roots and Lyon’s rich food history. Delicacy meets rusticity

Beyond making us crave both food and Beaujolais, the menu inspires confidence by proudly listing all of the restaurant’s local suppliers. Two menus are offered, at €32 and €39. As for starters, the Compagnie explored a broad spectrum of specialities, from rustic to refined: the comforting warmth of a gratinéed French onion soup, the indulgence of œuf en meurette, or the elegance of a silky mushroom velouté.

Nadège and Célestine

In the dining room, Nadège took excellent care of the Compagnie, serving our plates as promptly as she dished out anecdotes about the place — with a few perfectly timed jokes on the side. We had the pleasure of rediscovering a Lyonnais classic that deserves far more fame: poulet Célestine, served with its richly aromatic tomato sauce. More familiar in name, the andouillette from Maison Braillon and the tête de veau with gribiche sauce still managed to surprise us with their flawless execution.

All crazy for the baba

After enjoying a bold, well-structured claqueret — a local fresh cheese speciality — we moved on to dessert. And promptly fell head over heels for the baba. A light, spongy savarin, sweet and fragrant, that everyone digs into with a spoon, until Nadège sweeps back in to drench it generously with the house rum. And, as if that weren’t enough, our host pulled out a few shot glasses to remind us that rum can be just as delightful on its own.
