Bistrot du Marché – Chez Nénette: the village bouchon with a Lyonnais soul
Concocté par Valentin
This one’s a first. The Compagnie du Rognon leaves Lyon behind and drags its merry little feet all the way to Beaujolais, heading to the Bistrot du Marché, Chez Nénette. A little trip beyond the city walls for an extraordinary evening.
Fine dining in Les Chères
At the gateway to the Pierres Dorées region, in the village of Les Chères, the Compagnie made its way to the Bistrot du Marché, Chez Nénette. The place blends the easygoing charm of Beaujolais villages with the lively, cheeky spirit of Lyon’s bouchons. It’s also one of the latest establishments to receive the official “Les Bouchons Lyonnais” label.
Large starter and Large-main
“I’ve always loved bouchons, they’ve always been my thing. Everything porky, offal, tripe, you name it, I love it,” he says. (Source: Actu.fr, photo credit: lesbouchonslyonnais.org)
Beaujolais, bouchons & bravado
Even though you’re just half an hour from Lyon, the Bistrot du Marché Chez Nénette reminds you instantly where you stand: deep in bouchon territory. Every wall is dressed in red and white, echoing the Vichy-checkered tablecloths covering every table. Overlooking the room, Guignol and Gnafron, Lyon’s beloved puppet duo, preside in a mural depicting the city’s most iconic monuments, from the legendary to the contemporary.
Starters with staying power
Bistrot du Marché Chez Nénette goes straight to the point, offering a single menu, €28 at lunch, €32 in the evening, alongside daily specials that crank the dials of indulgence up to eleven. We feasted on roasted marrow bone sprinkled with fleur de sel; a bold, generous salad of veal’s feet with sauce gribiche; a magnificent rendition of Lyon’s signature œuf des Gones en meurette; and a hearty platter of Lyonnais specialties featuring dry sausage, homemade terrine, and silky cervelle de canut.
Second round
Barely recovered from the first volley, we’re already under fire from a second. The quenelle steals the spotlight, with its golden armor and sizzling bed of Nantua sauce still bubbling beneath. Reinforcements arrive in the form of a thick, noble pavé of blond Aquitaine beef, dense and perfectly marbled. And what a delight to see another house daring to serve persillé veal udder, here nestled among black trumpet mushrooms and tender potatoes. A feast of Pantagruelian proportions, rivaling even its counterpart at La Meunière.
A dessert to Chèr-ish
After fierce negotiations with our overworked stomachs, we finally surrender to a few sweet temptations. First up: a nostalgic egg flan straight from Grandma Marie-Louise’s recipe book, joined by some exquisite safe bets, a rum-soaked baba, a praline tart, and a silky chocolate mousse. After a few parting words with the team, we leave the Bistrot du Marché with light spirits, full bellies, and just a little tipsy from the whole evening.
